During my time on The Blog Bunker today, on Sirius 110 Indie_Talk, Joe and I discussed the loss of Tim Russert and what he meant to the world of politics and the world of journalism.

Now that I am back at my hotel, I am looking over some Russert related stories and found a great piece posted today in the NY Times. On top of that, Political Base and posted another great piece on possible replacements for Tim Russert on MTP.

First and foremost, Tim Russert cannot be replaced. NBC may put someone else in that chair, on that show, but they will not be replacing Tim Russert. What they will be doing is attempting to keep the show alive as best they can now that Tim will no longer be a part of it.

While I would entertain the idea of Keith Olbermann taking over MTP, his bias would undoubtedly kill the show in no time, so NBC should probably steer way clear of that notion. I like Keith and love Countdown, but Keith is not a good fit for a show that really has been and needs to continue to be non-partisan.

My only hope at this point, is that NBC will let Tom Brokaw temporarily anchor the show throughout the election season. This would give NBC time to find a good fit for the show and hopefully keep MTP as close as possible to the same.

It will be interesting to see what they decide to do, but one thing they won’t do, is replace Tim Russert in any meaningful fashion.
