Kristina Rizga has posted a great piece at WireTap Magazine discussing how the Obama nomination is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for youth organizers.

Now that the more preferred candidate among youth is the nominee, there is a huge potential to engage and mobilize the 17 million 18- to 25-year-olds, who have not yet voted in the primaries.

That is a very interesting look on things that many people may not have thought of until now. Obama has been able to drastically change the political landscape when it comes to the youth vote, and I think it is just beginning.

Had Hillary Clinton become the nominee, keeping the same level of youth voters engaged in this election would have been tough. Through intense organizing and online activity, Obama has been able to really attract the youth vote and rates that have never been experienced in politics before, something that Hillary Clinton never tried to do.

According to a Harvard University’s study in April, 70 percent of young people registered as Democrats said that they would vote for Barack Obama in November.

That speaks volumes about where the youth movement is headed and who they are behind.

Obama has tapped into a demographic like no other and that demographic is behind him like nothing we have ever seen. Going forward into the general election, this demographic will be a major player in the game.

Now that Obama is the nominee, youth groups across the country have the opportunity to mobilize like never before and expand into a much more important part of the political process. I think we are already seeing what the youth vote can do, and it is likely to only get stronger, which is something that has been needed in politics for quite sometime.
