Chris Bowers over at Open Left makes some interesting points on last night’s primary results, and that is how was last night any different than before?
I think for a while now people have known that Obama had the nomination secured, barring some catastrophe out of no where that no one saw coming. It is interesting to think about the fact that this race really could have been called several weeks back.
Fundamentally, nothing changed in the campaign tonight. The popular vote and delegate margin are basically the same as they were before Pennsylvania. If you were following the campaign closely, you knew it wouldn’t change, and that all but a handful of delegates are up for grabs before any given primary night.
I think this point rings most notable. Nothing really did change last night other than Obama basically wiped out her win in Pennsylvania and brought everything back to what it was prior to the PA contest.
It was the media that kept this going as long as it did. They were not covering the primary, they were just covering the Clinton collapse. Early on in this race, Sen. Clinton was the inevitable winner of the nomination. But when Barack Obama came along and started stealing the thunder, I believe it was the media that made this race closer than it really was all along.
Last night was a great night for Obama, but it didn’t really shine over other wins throughout the race and it didn’t really change the numbers all that much when you look at the math before and after.
I think the most important thing to look at here, and why this really may have been the clincher last night, is the fact that there are no more big contests left. From that standpoint, I can see why last night really was the deathblow that the media is making into today.
So while the numbers really didn’t change last night, the opportunities to change them did, so there is merit to the media frenzy this morning that it is all over. However, it has really been over for weeks now, but that wouldn’t make very good news now would it?
