A leading Democrat in the Senate, on Saturday, called last year’s troop build-up in Iraq a failure.

Sen. Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, says that the surge didn’t succeed, because troops are still committed there in large numbers and political reconciliation has not been achieved.

Biden spoke on Saturday during the Democratic radio address saying that

“The purpose of the surge was to bring violence in Iraq down so that its leaders could come together politically,” “Violence has come down, but the Iraqis have not come together.”

Biden also said that

“There is little evidence the Iraqis will settle their differences peacefully any time soon.”

Many Democrats have called “the surge” strategy unacceptable and have lobbied to pursue alternative plan through legislation. Many Republicans however, have said that they are satisfied with the progress that “the surge” has brought about.

A simple view of the news coming out of Iraq over the last few weeks would tell you that “the surge” just simply has not worked. While it did decrease violence, that violence has now grown again, prompting curfews throughout the region due to the increased violence.

Once again, I will reiterate my view that the Iraq war is senseless, useless, and a conflict that we cannot win.
